Have you ever seen a Hindu Temple built beside a Chinese temple,
or found Malay or Indian uncles and aunties practicing Tai-Chi with
Chinese senior citizen?
Here in Singapore waterloo street, Sri Krishnan Hindu Temple neighbour
to the Goddess of Mercy Chinese temple. You would be amazed by the
number of Chinese worshippers while praying in the Chinese temple,
also go over to the Indian temple and offer joss sticks and incense
to Hindu gods. You can see that the Hindu welcome the Chinese worshippers
by setting up an offerings table just in front of the Indian temple
to receive their offering. As a gesture of goodwill, it is also
not hard to find Indian Hindu actually joining the Chinese outside
in using joss sticks to pray.
Clearly, the Chinese worshippers had no problems praying to Hindu
gods nor the Indian Hindus had qualms worshipping Chinese style
with joss sticks and incense.
In the Neighbourhood Park all around Singapore, it is not hard to
find the mixed races of Malays, Indians and Chinese get together
in the morning to learn Chinese Tai-Chi. This gathering is not affected
by the difference in religion, age or gender, nor is it affected
by religious head gear like tudang or turban.
With all these real life examples, Singapore remain as one of
the most successful country that saw different ethnic groups to
keep their culture, language and customs while at the same time
be totally accepting of others.
